March 15 "Thieves and Robbers" - enemies of the cross of Christ - Phillipians 3:18,19I was reading something today on the catholic news site and was amazed at the robbery in the words that were before me on the page. I couldn't help but think of the words of Jesus (See: John 10:1-5) talking about thieves and robbers. The article was breathing fiery robbery and thievery if that is even an english word, help me LORD. This was so sad and yet it is something that the largest and most apostate church in the world is doing today.
If you ever doubted of what spirit the catholic church is of, just read this article below to understand just how apostate the church is. This is the richest church in the whole world charging people money for a blessing, what nerve. These folks cannot give you anything that does not come from heaven. They are selling you something you can get FREE from john - See: John 3:27. Paul rebuked the corinthian church for acting like they did not receive anything from God - See: 1 cor 4:7. You see, what the catholics these folks are hiding from you is the TRUTH, that ALL things are of God (See: 2 Cor 5:18). For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever amen - (See: Romans 11:36)
My God, this exposes who are the enemies of of the cross of christ spoken of in phillipians 3:18 - how can a church charge for a blessing when the scriptures are so clear that "freely have we received, freely should we give - Matthew 10:8. You see the disciples did more than just give a hand-scripted papal blessings on parchment, My God, they healed the sick, cleansed lepers, raised the dead, casted out devils, but JESUS, the King of Kings told them not to ask any compensation for this, he said - Freely ye have received, freely give.
The catholic church is just finding an avenue to bewitch us like the old galatians church during the days of paul (See: Galatians 3:1). You see the only difference is that now we have the Spirit of God in the true churches of God, the remnant that he promised in the last days. The Holyghost, the spirit of truth that the world, including the catholic church CANNOT receive , because they seeth him not, neither knoweth him. But God has a people sanctified and separated unto him that know that Spirit, the Holy Ghost, for he dwelleth with us, and shall be in us (See:John 14:17).
This is why am posting this on my page - to expose the spirit of the anti christ that is running rampant in this present world. That is why if you are not saved today, get saved the right way. Yes, there is a right way and a counterfeit way that satan has devised too. Gods way is found in the book of Acts chapter 2. Peter put it this way - "Repent and be baptized EVERYONE of you in the name of the of Jesus christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive he gift of the HolyGhost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to ALL that are afar off, even as many as the LORD our God shall call. Any yes, you do need the baptism of water and of the spirit, which is the Holy Ghost. If you are in doubt read Acts 19:1-7 where Apollos found some disciples in Ephesus who hadn't received the baptism of the HolyGhost, actually, like many catholics they hadn't even heard of it. You see they were baptized with the baptism of John the baptist (See: Matthew 28:19), but that was not good enough. They had to be baptized right, according to Acts 2:38, and also get the baptism of the HolyGhost.
You see, if you are a catholic out there and you think you can go to mass, get the eucharist, say the rosary to mary and get sprinkled with Holy water, you are not ready to meet Jesus. Instead of sending six to 25 euros to get a blessing in a parchment of cloth, why dont you go and get baptized like your claimed apostle peter said in Acts chapter 2, and then seek of the HolyGhost baptism so that you can be filled with Gods spirit. Oh, Incase you think you don't have to speak in tongues, well, you need to read 1 Cor 14:49 where paul says not to FORBID to speak with tongues. Paul, the greatest Apostle that ever lived spoke in tongues. Who are you to say that it is not needed. That is the real blessing you see, that the catholic church cannot tell you about. You see that is the blessing that God wants you to have, something they are not willing to give you. But they can give you a blessing in a parchment of clothing, something that will do you no good when God comes back for his bride. As a bride of Christ, what are you doing to make yourself ready. How can you be his bride when you are not doing anything that he has asked you to do to prepare for the marriage?. The blessing on the parchment of cloth will NOT do anything for you come the marriage of the lamb of God.
So what blessing would you rather have?. The answer to that question will determine where you spend eternity. You can buy a parchment of cloth and hang on your wall from a flea market for a dollar, but you cannot buy the salvation of God.
Finally, beware that you don't end up like Barjesus (See: Acts 13:6-12), who tried like this article, full of all subtilty and all mischief, sought to turn away the deputy from the faith. Don't let any man, church or anyone lead turn you away from the faith. Paul called him a child of the devil, an enemy of righteousness, a person that would cease at nothing trying to pervert the right ways of the LORD. This article is a true pervession of the ways of God as it conflicts with the teachings of God regarding his blessings. God paid the ultimate price, his life, to give us all blessings. No man or any creature or power has the right whatsoever to charge anyone for a blessing.
My plea to you is that you be like the deputy of the country Sergius Paulus, who when he saw the judgement that the HolyGhost by paul put on Barjesus, believed, being astonished at the doctrine of the LORD. Beware of the leaven of the pharisees and of their doctrine like Jesus Christ warned us to be (See:Matthew 16:11).
Remmember, God is ever merciful(Psa 37:26) and his merciful kindness is great towards us, and his truth endureth forever(Psa 117:2) and he is not one to keep his anger forever (Jer 3:12). Seek him while he might yet be found, there comes a time when you will seek him and you cannot find him - run to him NOW!

"No pigs allowed in my parlor - 1 Corinthians 6:19-20"Pigs in the Parlor!
As I was doing my normal Sunday studies today I ran into a very paradoxical statement, yet very true statement - 'pigs in the parlour'. You see, as Christians we sometimes forget that we are the temple of the Holy Ghost (Gods parlour), and entertain pigs (demonic powers) to enter there in so casually.
Demon spirits can invade and indwell human bodies. It is their objective to do so. By indwelling a person they obtain a greater advantage in controlling that person than when they are working from the outside. When demons indwell a person that person is said to "have" evil spirits, to be "possessed" by the King James Version is the Greek word "daimonizomai. Many Greek authorities say that is not an accurate translation. It should be translated "demonized" or "have demons". Much misunderstanding has resulted from the use of the word "possessed". This word suggests total ownership. In this sense, a Christian could NEVER be "demon possessed". He could not be owned by demons because he is owned by Christ - 1 Peter 1:18,19 and 1 Cor 6:19,20.
The Christian should always consider indwelling demons as unnecessary and undesirable TRESPASSERS. A trespasser is one who 'unlawfully and stealthily' encroaches upon the territory of another. Trespassers can continue their unlawful practices until they are confronted and challenged on the basis of ones 'legal rights'. Jesus has purchased the believer with his own blood and has made him a steward over his own life. The devil has no legal right to him; it is up to him to defend his rights. No demon can remain when the Christian seriously desires him to go!. "Resist the devil and he will flee from you" (James 4:7). Demons consider the body of the person indwelt to be their "house" - Matthew 12:43,44.
It is not uncommon for demons to speak through a person who is being delivered (See: Mark 1:23,24). Spirits often declare, "This is my house". They are referring to the person's body, and are seeking to deceive the person and the deliverance minister into thinking that they have a right to that body. No demon can backup such a claim. All demons are liars and deceivers. Demons have no title to bodies redeemed by the blood for the Lord Jesus Christ.
When demons are being commanded out of a person they will sometimes contend "I have been here a long time" as though tenure of occupancy gives them title to a person's body. The Christian must be assured that no demon has a legal right to indwell his body. Twenty five times in the New Testament demons are called "unclean spirits". The word "unclean" is the same word used to designate certain creatures which the Israelites were not to eat (See: Acts 10:11-14). The Pig was one of those "unclean" creatures. According to Old Testament law they were not to be eaten or even touched. The New Testament lifts this prohibition by showing that these creatures were spiritual type - Colossians 2:15-17.
As a spiritual type the pig is to the natural realm what the demon spirit is to the spiritual realm. Just as the Israelite zealously protected himself from contact with pigs, the Christian is to guard himself from contact with evil spirits. What would you do if a herd of 'filthy pigs' came into your parlour and began to make themselves at home? Would you invite such a thing? Would you pay no attention to them in the hope they would soon leave of their own accord? Would you try to clean up their mess as fast as they made it? I am hoping you would do NONE of these things. You would drive them out as quickly and unceremoniously as possible! And this is to be our attitude toward demon spirits. As soon as they are discovered they are to be driven out.
All four gospels record the event of Jesus cleansing the temple. This is an unusual picture of the Lord. He was filled with righteous indignation at what he found in the temple. It was no time for mere words; it was a time for action. He began personally and determinedly to purge the temple of every defiling thing. This is an illustration of the cleansing of our bodies, which are the temples of the Holy Ghost, from all that is unclean. Demon spirits provide NOTHING GOOD. They only defile. They have no more place in us than the cattle, birds and money changers had in the earthly temple. We can act in the same authority with which Jesus cleansed the temple and rid ourselves of defiling evil spirits. Jesus did not make any pretty little speeches or debate with those who defiled the temple - he drove them out!
As unreasonable as it may seem, some Christians are not as ready to get rid of indwelling demons as one might assume. Some are embarrassed to admit the need for deliverance. The embarrassment should never result from having them but in failure to act promptly in getting them out. Others have walked in agreement with certain spirits for so long that they do not want to change. Not all Christians really want to live in PURITY. Such are as those who have made friends with the pigs. But even the prodigal son came to himself while among the swine and decided that he would separate himself and return to his father. Let us pray that all of God's children who cohabit with spiritual swine see that there is a better life.
A research scientist in bio-chemistry once said of an experiment in which he was engaged. It was his objective to isolate and identify the factors which are responsible for the hog pen odors. By determining the reason why hogs smell as they do it would then be possible to find an antidote. Thus, hogs could be made more compatible with human society.
It is NOT my objective, and I hope yours too, to make demons spirits compatible. I am NOT looking for ways to make demons easier to live with but how to get rid of them.
As Charles H. Kraft and David M. DeBord have noted in their excellent book The Rules of Engagement - Understanding the Principles That Govern the Spiritual Battles in Our Lives, "Any act of dedication to, or worship of, anything or anyone other than God invites Satan to work in our lives. When people seek spiritual power or "enlightenment" offered through various Eastern religions, New Age teachings, Freemasonry, Scientology, or the like they open themselves up to God's enemy - spiritual pigs. Even if the person is naive and the commitment marginal or even just done in jest, what they actually are doing is pledging allegiance to the power behind that religion or organization. This allegiance gives Satan specific rights to them."
As for me and my house, we want No Pigs in Our Parlor!! February 22 Juvenile delinquents or victims?Railroaded: Teens Jailed So Judges Could Profit
Shocking alleged court corruption sent kids to prison camps for kickbacks
Updated 6:15 PM EST, Wed, Feb 11, 2009
AP
Kurt Kruger was sentenced to four months in a wilderness camp after his friend was caught shoplifting CDs. Pennsylvania judges are accused of taking money to operate kangaroo court hearings and keep the camps filled.
For years, the juvenile court system in Wilkes-Barre operated like a conveyor belt: Youngsters were brought before judges without a lawyer, given hearings that lasted only a minute or two, and then sent off to juvenile prison for months for minor offenses.
The explanation, prosecutors say, was corruption on the bench.
In one of the most shocking cases of courtroom graft on record, two Pennsylvania judges have been charged with taking millions of dollars in kickbacks to send teenagers to two privately run youth detention centers.
"I've never encountered, and I don't think that we will in our lifetimes, a case where literally thousands of kids' lives were just tossed aside in order for a couple of judges to make some money," said Marsha Levick, an attorney with the Philadelphia-based Juvenile Law Center, which is representing hundreds of youths sentenced in Wilkes-Barre.
Prosecutors say Luzerne County Judges Mark Ciavarella and Michael Conahan took $2.6 million in payoffs to put juvenile offenders in lockups run by PA Child Care LLC and a sister company, Western PA Child Care LLC. The judges were charged on Jan. 26 and removed from the bench by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court shortly afterward.
No company officials have been charged, but the investigation is still going on.
The high court, meanwhile, is looking into whether hundreds or even thousands of sentences should be overturned and the juveniles' records expunged.
Among the offenders were teenagers who were locked up for months for stealing loose change from cars, writing a prank note and possessing drug paraphernalia. Many had never been in trouble before. Some were imprisoned even after probation officers recommended against it.
Many appeared without lawyers, despite the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark 1967 ruling that children have a constitutional right to counsel.
The judges are scheduled to plead guilty to fraud Thursday in federal court. Their plea agreements call for sentences of more than seven years behind bars.
Ciavarella, 58, who presided over Luzerne County's juvenile court for 12 years, acknowledged last week in a letter to his former colleagues, "I have disgraced my judgeship. My actions have destroyed everything I worked to accomplish and I have only myself to blame." Ciavarella, though, has denied he got kickbacks for sending youths to prison.
Conahan, 56, has remained silent about the case.
Many Pennsylvania counties contract with privately run juvenile detention centers, paying them either a fixed overall fee or a certain amount per youth, per day.
In Luzerne County, prosecutors say, Conahan shut down the county-run juvenile prison in 2002 and helped the two companies secure rich contracts worth tens of millions of dollars, at least some of that dependent on how many juveniles were locked up.
One of the contracts — a 20-year agreement with PA Child Care worth an estimated $58 million — was later canceled by the county as exorbitant.
The judges are accused of taking payoffs between 2003 and 2006.
Robert J. Powell co-owned PA Child Care and Western PA Child Care until June. His attorney, Mark Sheppard, said his client was the victim of an extortion scheme.
"Bob Powell never solicited a nickel from these judges and really was a victim of their demands," he said. "These judges made it very plain to Mr. Powell that he was going to be required to pay certain monies."
For years, youth advocacy groups complained that Ciavarella was ridiculously harsh and ran roughshod over youngsters' constitutional rights. Ciavarella sent a quarter of his juvenile defendants to detention centers from 2002 to 2006, compared with a statewide rate of one in 10.
The criminal charges confirmed the advocacy groups' worst suspicions and have called into question all the sentences he pronounced.
Hillary Transue did not have an attorney, nor was she told of her right to one, when she appeared in Ciavarella's courtroom in 2007 for building a MySpace page that lampooned her assistant principal.
Her mother, Laurene Transue, worked for 16 years in the child services department of another county and said she was certain Hillary would get a slap on the wrist. Instead, Ciavarella sentenced her to three months; she got out after a month, with help from a lawyer.
"I felt so disgraced for a while, like, what do people think of me now?" said Hillary, now 17 and a high school senior who plans to become an English teacher.
Laurene Transue said Ciavarella "was playing God. And not only was he doing that, he was getting money for it. He was betraying the trust put in him to do what is best for children."
Kurt Kruger, now 22, had never been in trouble with the law until the day police accused him of acting as a lookout while his friend shoplifted less than $200 worth of DVDs from Wal-Mart. He said he didn't know his friend was going to steal anything.
Kruger pleaded guilty before Ciavarella and spent three days in a company-run juvenile detention center, plus four months at a youth wilderness camp run by a different operator.
"Never in a million years did I think that I would actually get sent away. I was completely destroyed," said Kruger, who later dropped out of school. He said he wants to get his record expunged, earn his high school equivalency diploma and go to college.
"I got a raw deal, and yeah, it's not fair," he said, "but now it's 100 times bigger than me."
Copyright Associated Press January 20 Obama Inauguration speech - grow up Amerika!Full transcript as prepared for delivery of President Barack Obama's inaugural remarks on Jan. 20, 2009, at the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C. My fellow citizens: I stand here today humbled by the task before us, grateful for the trust you have bestowed, mindful of the sacrifices borne by our ancestors. I thank President Bush for his service to our nation, as well as the generosity and cooperation he has shown throughout this transition. Forty-four Americans have now taken the presidential oath. The words have been spoken during rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace. Yet, every so often the oath is taken amidst gathering clouds and raging storms. At these moments, America has carried on not simply because of the skill or vision of those in high office, but because We the People have remained faithful to the ideals of our forbearers, and true to our founding documents. So it has been. So it must be with this generation of Americans. That we are in the midst of crisis is now well understood. Our nation is at war, against a far-reaching network of violence and hatred. Our economy is badly weakened, a consequence of greed and irresponsibility on the part of some, but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age. Homes have been lost; jobs shed; businesses shuttered. Our health care is too costly; our schools fail too many; and each day brings further evidence that the ways we use energy strengthen our adversaries and threaten our planet. These are the indicators of crisis, subject to data and statistics. Less measurable but no less profound is a sapping of confidence across our land - a nagging fear that America's decline is inevitable, and that the next generation must lower its sights. Today I say to you that the challenges we face are real. They are serious and they are many. They will not be met easily or in a short span of time. But know this, America - they will be met. On this day, we gather because we have chosen hope over fear, unity of purpose over conflict and discord. On this day, we come to proclaim an end to the petty grievances and false promises, the recriminations and worn out dogmas, that for far too long have strangled our politics. We remain a young nation, but in the words of Scripture, the time has come to set aside childish things. The time has come to reaffirm our enduring spirit; to choose our better history; to carry forward that precious gift, that noble idea, passed on from generation to generation: the God-given promise that all are equal, all are free, and all deserve a chance to pursue their full measure of happiness. In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom. For us, they packed up their few worldly possessions and traveled across oceans in search of a new life. For us, they toiled in sweatshops and settled the West; endured the lash of the whip and plowed the hard earth. For us, they fought and died, in places like Concord and Gettysburg; Normandy and Khe Sahn. Time and again these men and women struggled and sacrificed and worked till their hands were raw so that we might live a better life. They saw America as bigger than the sum of our individual ambitions; greater than all the differences of birth or wealth or faction. This is the journey we continue today. We remain the most prosperous, powerful nation on Earth. Our workers are no less productive than when this crisis began. Our minds are no less inventive, our goods and services no less needed than they were last week or last month or last year. Our capacity remains undiminished. But our time of standing pat, of protecting narrow interests and putting off unpleasant decisions - that time has surely passed. Starting today, we must pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and begin again the work of remaking America. For everywhere we look, there is work to be done. The state of the economy calls for action, bold and swift, and we will act - not only to create new jobs, but to lay a new foundation for growth. We will build the roads and bridges, the electric grids and digital lines that feed our commerce and bind us together. We will restore science to its rightful place, and wield technology's wonders to raise health care's quality and lower its cost. We will harness the sun and the winds and the soil to fuel our cars and run our factories. And we will transform our schools and colleges and universities to meet the demands of a new age. All this we can do. And all this we will do. Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions - who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten what this country has already done; what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage. What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long no longer apply. The question we ask today is not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works - whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified. Where the answer is yes, we intend to move forward. Where the answer is no, programs will end. And those of us who manage the public's dollars will be held to account - to spend wisely, reform bad habits, and do our business in the light of day - because only then can we restore the vital trust between a people and their government. Nor is the question before us whether the market is a force for good or ill. Its power to generate wealth and expand freedom is unmatched, but this crisis has reminded us that without a watchful eye, the market can spin out of control - and that a nation cannot prosper long when it favors only the prosperous. The success of our economy has always depended not just on the size of our Gross Domestic Product, but on the reach of our prosperity; on our ability to extend opportunity to every willing heart - not out of charity, but because it is the surest route to our common good. As for our common defense, we reject as false the choice between our safety and our ideals. Our Founding Fathers, faced with perils we can scarcely imagine, drafted a charter to assure the rule of law and the rights of man, a charter expanded by the blood of generations. Those ideals still light the world, and we will not give them up for expedience's sake. And so to all other peoples and governments who are watching today, from the grandest capitals to the small village where my father was born: know that America is a friend of each nation and every man, woman, and child who seeks a future of peace and dignity, and that we are ready to lead once more. Recall that earlier generations faced down fascism and communism not just with missiles and tanks, but with sturdy alliances and enduring convictions. They understood that our power alone cannot protect us, nor does it entitle us to do as we please. Instead, they knew that our power grows through its prudent use; our security emanates from the justness of our cause, the force of our example, the tempering qualities of humility and restraint. We are the keepers of this legacy. Guided by these principles once more, we can meet those new threats that demand even greater effort - even greater cooperation and understanding between nations. We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people, and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan. With old friends and former foes, we will work tirelessly to lessen the nuclear threat, and roll back the specter of a warming planet. We will not apologize for our way of life, nor will we waver in its defense, and for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken; you cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you. For we know that our patchwork heritage is a strength, not a weakness. We are a nation of Christians and Muslims, Jews and Hindus - and non-believers. We are shaped by every language and culture, drawn from every end of this Earth; and because we have tasted the bitter swill of civil war and segregation, and emerged from that dark chapter stronger and more united, we cannot help but believe that the old hatreds shall someday pass; that the lines of tribe shall soon dissolve; that as the world grows smaller, our common humanity shall reveal itself; and that America must play its role in ushering in a new era of peace. To the Muslim world, we seek a new way forward, based on mutual interest and mutual respect. To those leaders around the globe who seek to sow conflict, or blame their society's ills on the West - know that your people will judge you on what you can build, not what you destroy. To those who cling to power through corruption and deceit and the silencing of dissent, know that you are on the wrong side of history; but that we will extend a hand if you are willing to unclench your fist. To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders; nor can we consume the world's resources without regard to effect. For the world has changed, and we must change with it. As we consider the road that unfolds before us, we remember with humble gratitude those brave Americans who, at this very hour, patrol far-off deserts and distant mountains. They have something to tell us today, just as the fallen heroes who lie in Arlington whisper through the ages. We honor them not only because they are guardians of our liberty, but because they embody the spirit of service; a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves. And yet, at this moment - a moment that will define a generation - it is precisely this spirit that must inhabit us all. For as much as government can do and must do, it is ultimately the faith and determination of the American people upon which this nation relies. It is the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job which sees us through our darkest hours. It is the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child, that finally decides our fate. Our challenges may be new. The instruments with which we meet them may be new. But those values upon which our success depends - hard work and honesty, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism - these things are old. These things are true. They have been the quiet force of progress throughout our history. What is demanded then is a return to these truths. What is required of us now is a new era of responsibility - a recognition, on the part of every American, that we have duties to ourselves, our nation, and the world, duties that we do not grudgingly accept but rather seize gladly, firm in the knowledge that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character, than giving our all to a difficult task. This is the price and the promise of citizenship. This is the source of our confidence - the knowledge that God calls on us to shape an uncertain destiny. This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed - why men and women and children of every race and every faith can join in celebration across this magnificent mall, and why a man whose father less than sixty years ago might not have been served at a local restaurant can now stand before you to take a most sacred oath. So let us mark this day with remembrance, of who we are and how far we have traveled. In the year of America's birth, in the coldest of months, a small band of patriots huddled by dying campfires on the shores of an icy river. The capital was abandoned. The enemy was advancing. The snow was stained with blood. At a moment when the outcome of our revolution was most in doubt, the father of our nation ordered these words be read to the people: "Let it be told to the future world...that in the depth of winter, when nothing but hope and virtue could survive...that the city and the country, alarmed at one common danger, came forth to meet [it]." America. In the face of our common dangers, in this winter of our hardship, let us remember these timeless words. With hope and virtue, let us brave once more the icy currents, and endure what storms may come. Let it be said by our children's children that when we were tested we refused to let this journey end, that we did not turn back nor did we falter; and with eyes fixed on the horizon and God's grace upon us, we carried forth that great gift of freedom and delivered it safely to future generations. Obama's Sober Sermon on the StepsWASHINGTON, DC -- The new president and the throng that turned out
to cheer him and hear him today were on two very different missions.
The crowd had come to celebrate. Obama had come to deliver a sober
sermon.
I arrived at the Capitol early, and as the morning progressed, and the time for the Inaugural ceremony grew near, you could feel the anticipation and the excitement building. Chants of "O-ba-ma... O-ba-ma" washed forward from the hundreds of thousands crowding the National Mall, including right after he was first introduced as president. But the new president wasn't in the mood to be distracted, and cut the chant short with a quick "thank you." The first line of his speech -- "I stand here today humbled by the task before us" -- was a solemn reality check. His mention of the "gathering clouds and raging storms" that greet his new administration was intended to immediately distinguish his presidency from others that began amidst "rising tides of prosperity and the still waters of peace." It was clear from the beginning that the speech was a warning bell. For me, the most compelling moment of the speech came when he quoted the Bible. While we remain a young nation, he said, "the time has come to set aside childish things." There was something very powerful about watching this relatively young man, one of the youngest to ever hold the highest office in the land, telling the people of America to grow up. He touched on the same theme when he described our "badly weakened economy" as a consequence of not just "greed and irresponsibility on the part of some but also our collective failure to make hard choices and prepare the nation for a new age." Mature people make hard choices; childish ones, in the words of the new president, "prefer leisure over work" and "seek only the pleasures of riches and fame." Time to grow up. Obama also made a point of honoring "the doers, the makers of things." As opposed to those who make thing up -- like, say, credit default swaps. The speech was ultimately optimistic: "The challenges we face are real, they are serious and they are many... But know this, America: They will be met." Indeed, the speech was reassuring in a Rooseveltian "the only thing we have to fear..." way. But the reassurance came with a caveat. We will overcome the many challenges facing us -- but only if we grow up. "The greatness of our nation," he reminded us, "is never a given. It must be earned." And it will only be achieved if we realize that we are not, as a child believes, the center of the universe but a part of a greater whole. A whole built on values that "are old": "honesty and hard work, courage and fair play, tolerance and curiosity, loyalty and patriotism." The new president also signaled that he will put the need for service front and center in his presidency, lauding those who demonstrate "the spirit of service: a willingness to find meaning in something greater than themselves." And he brought things full circle, closing his Sermon on the Steps by reminding his buoyant flock "that there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of our character than giving our all to a difficult task." The times are hard and they are clearly a-changing.
